UK Crypto Market Police: Law Enforcement Needs to Understand Bitcoin
The Police Department of Leicestershire, United Kingdom (UK) has issued a regulation regarding the arrest of Paul Johnson - the developer of the darknet (underground network) on April 18. Johnson was sentenced to 8 years, and is said to have made more than $2.5 million from selling drugs online.
Leicestershire Police Sergeant Phil Ariss said:
Digital media investigators assisted police in issuing arrest warrants, and seized $375,300 worth of crypto assets.

Ariss has been a specialist in crypto-related cases since he joined the East Midlands Special Operations Unit's Cybercrime Team in 2016. Later, he moved on to the High Tech Crime program of the East Midlands Special Operations unit. National Police Council (NPCC).
Working with the NPCC, Ariss has collaborated and professionally trained local and international government agencies dealing with crypto crime.
Ariss said that when he first joined the police force and started as a local officer in 2008, he never thought he would become a cryptocurrency expert.
“I learned a lot about how criminals use cryptocurrencies as a means of maintaining anonymity. While they are not used in the drug market, they are used in other areas such as fraud, extortion or cybercrime.” Aris shared.
Last month, UK police revealed 562 cases of Bitcoin (BTC) - related to blackmail scams, occurring across the country over the past 2 years. Ariss noted many cases where individuals and businesses were able to recover lost funds after authorities seized crypto assets from criminals.
2. Innovative technology requires vigilance from law enforcement
Ariss emphasized the need for law enforcement to understand Bitcoin and keep abreast of the evolving crypto landscape:
“As more and more criminals start using Bitcoin and other private finance methods, we have to know what to look out for. We regularly train officers and staff on the signs of using Bitcoin, not giving criminals the opportunity to make money.”
